Carlos Alonso on the Spanish Old Masters: José de Ribera and Juan de Zurbarán
At the exhibition “Symphony of Art and Nature. The Serlachius Collection”, alongside outstanding Finnish art, several works from Gösta Serlachius’ Old Masterist collection are also on display, including two examples of Spanish Golden Age painting. These two works serve as the starting point for a lecture by art historian Carlos Alonso Perez-Fajardo, focusing on two key representatives of the Spanish school of painting. The first of them — José de Ribera — was the most successful Spanish artist of the 17th century. The second — Juan de Zurbarán — despite his remarkable talent, has remained in the shadow of his father, Francisco de Zurbarán, as only a few works by this artist, who died young, have survived. It is therefore all the more remarkable that a rare example of his oeuvre made its way into a Finnish collection and can now be seen by the Estonian art public at the Kadriorg Art Museum. The lecture will shed light on the context in which these works were created, as well as the masters’ connections with European art centres, patrons, and other renowned painters.
The lecture will be in English.
