Viesturs Jansons (tenor, Latvian National Opera)
Johan Randvere (piano)
Selection from the vocal cycle “Winter Journey” D.911
“Winter Journey” is one of the pearls of Romantic songwriting – a painful and moving glimpse of the soul of the person of that era. Schubert himself has described parts of the work as “terrible songs that still mean more to me than all my previous vocal compositions.”
Viesturs Jansons is one of the premieres of the Latvian National Opera, who have sung a lot in Estonia both on the stage of the National Opera and as a soloist in large-scale performances. Johan Randvere captivates listeners with the charm and sensitivity characteristic to him.
The song series with a pervasive motif have both musical and poetic value – they are like novels in music. Often, vocal cycles represent the character’s physical and psychological journeys. You will also hear jazz arrangements of the cycles at two concerts.
